Characteristics of Effective Learning – This course is aimed Practitioners working with children under five, with an interest in understanding Characteristics of Effective Learning.

Characteristics of Effective Learning (CoEL) are a element in the current Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS).   CoEL advocate that in planning and guiding children’s activities, practitioners must reflect on the different ways that children learn, and then reflect these in their practice. A child’s individual learning characteristic will determine the way they respond to both the teaching and learning taking place in the environment. Three characteristics of effective teaching and learning identified by the EYFS are:

Playing and Exploring
Active learning
Creating and Thinking critically

This course looks at improving practitioners understanding of what (CoEL) are and how these headings can be understood. Once the practitioners are confident with the terms. The course then explores how practitioners can use these headings to demonstrate their understanding of how individual children learn.

Learning Outcomes;
• Understand the purpose of Characteristics of Effective Learning (CoEl)
• Identify ways to use (CoEl) to understand child development.
• Identify ways (CoEl) can demonstrate their own knowledge of individual children.
• Explain the purpose of using (CoEl) effectively.
• Understand how Characteristics of effective learning supports the planning cycle.
